Predictive Modeling on the Workers’ Compensation Cycle

Speakers

Following a decade of soft workers’ compensation market, many in the industry have wondered when the current cycle will again begin to shift? Reserve development and reserve trends have traditionally been used as early indicators of changing market dynamics, but can we come up with a better solution? To answer that question, Guy Carpenter applied machine learning to study the entire U.S. WC industry using data spanning over 25 years. In addition to Schedule P loss development information, we have derived many industry and company specific predictors which are not traditionally used in the reserving process, and then fit those attributes into our machine learning models. Exogenous effects on the WC market were accounted with an array of predictors capturing relevant macroeconomic trends. We will share why we have good confidence in our analysis, along with meaningful insights into the future of the WC market cycle.
